Synopsis
World War Z World War Z tells the story of an 'apocalypse', depicted by the outbreak of a zombie attack that kills everyone in the world. The film begins with the Gerry Lane family trip. He is a former staff of the United Nations (UN). It is said, Lane and his family were on their way to Philadelphia and they were stuck in traffic. In the jam, Lane heard a report on the radio that there was a worldwide rabies outbreak. The plague was caused by a zombie virus. The attack makes the victim who was bitten turn into a zombie instantly. After hearing the news, Lane's family took refuge in the apartment complex. They are waiting to be rescued by a helicopter sent by Lane's former colleague at the United Nations, Thierry. Because help from colleagues did not come, the Lane family finally chose to save themselves by boarding a ship belonging to the US Navy. This ship is heading for the coast of New York City. In New York, a team is conducting a joint analysis with military personnel of the spread of the outbreak around the world. A virologist named Dr. Fassbach argued that the outbreak was caused by a virus whose origins had to be found in order for a vaccine to be developed. World War Z premiered in theaters on June 21, 2013 and grossed US $ 540,007,876, according to IMDb.
World War Z was produced by a top filmmaker, Marc Foster. As we all know, Foster has worked on big films, such as Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, The Kite Runner, and the James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. With a budget of around USD 200 million and a star like Brad Pitt, it is guaranteed that this film will entertain film lovers. As it turns out, World War Z is not only entertaining, but a fresh aesthetic achievement for the genre with a wide scale story. The film tells the story of a zombie epidemic that spreads globally to all corners of the globe, and viewers see from the perspective of Gerry Lane, a UN investigator who specializes in dangerous battlefields. I split the reviews by chapters for easy explanation.
ACT I
The film opens with a title sequence in the form of a very captivating montage. With dynamic and stomping musical accompaniment, news footage images and pictures are inserted in such a way as to support information for the audience. This montage contains information about a mysterious plague that has begun to spread, a crowd of people, insects and wild animals, and others. The message about the environment and global warming is also clearly mentioned here. Before the title “World War Z” appeared, the images of humans and animals / insects being cut alternately rapidly (rhythmic editing) indicated “things are going to get ugly”.
Without a background story (character characterizations), the film just walks into a tense action segment all of a sudden. Almost non-stop and pause. The quick editing served is excellent here. For a moment, we don't even know exactly what we are facing. Gerry and his wife and two daughters must save themselves and survive the brutal wrath of the zombies. With impressive scene visuals, Garry sees a victim, with just 12 seconds before becoming a zombie. The audience immediately knew, this zombie is very dangerous, strong, and able to move very fast (unlike most zombie movies). As a result, with this new information, the tension is getting worse, our adrenaline is getting pumped and without realizing it we are getting more and more immersed in the story. Several shots from the air show how the zombies finish off the frantically running citizens and take over the city in just a matter of minutes. It's crazy, just recently I found out, zombies chase their prey on the roof of a tall building, until they dare to jump into the helicopter that is running until they fall down.
ACT II
In the next segment of the story, Gerry gets the task of investigating how this pandemic got started with a professor from Harvard. Gerry and his team headed for an airport in South Korea where important information was suspected. One thing that we would not expect happened. The professor died due to a slip and this situation makes us even more worried. A suspenseful horror segment is presented here amidst the rain and the dark night. Gerry also struggled to fly to Israel to track down someone there who was suspected of knowing about this epidemic, before the whole world knew. Apart from the tense action, the investigation process also makes us even more excited about the story. After this, what happens in the future is a surprise after a surprise that we absolutely cannot predict, both the process and the end result.
The segment in Israel is perhaps the most colossal, brutal and splashy segment of zombie action of its kind. One city was protected by a very high wall while hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of zombies, were outside. When that one moment comes, the zombies can no longer be stopped. The strong fortress was only penetrated because of a group of people who were singing too loudly (like many stupid cases in my place, what's the point of lockdown if social distancing is not done). Gerry for the umpteenth time had to run to save his life. This time, he was accompanied by a young woman, Segen, a local policeman who he had to amputate his hand, so it wouldn't spread throughout his body. Until the end, Gerry could not be separated from this figure. Who would have thought, this important character would only appear in the middle of the film.
With great difficulty, Gerry and Segen finally got on a commercial flight to Switzerland. One segment of the next action scene, it feels like one of the most thrilling and terrifying action scenes ever in a zombie-themed film. The audience who thought there was no action here was wrong. We know exactly what the zombies can do on land. What to expect, if you were trapped in a plane that was briefly filled with zombies. When watching this film for the first time, the tension of this scene was so maximum and really unbelievable, how can they now escape this situation? You have to see it for yourself to believe it.
ACT III
Unlike before, the third act of the film presents something completely different. They are in a remote location in the WHO research building. Like the Mission Impossible series, they now have a mission to take virus samples in the next building full of zombies. This scene presents how the combination of unlimited storytelling (the audience knows more than the actor's story information) and limited (the audience gets the story's information only from the actor's point of view) works optimally to give the effect of suspense and surprise. It's brilliant and effective, very stressful, and at the same time soothing. Aesthetically, this is the most quality action segment.
